I am going back to school and professional development. One day is designated as a Job-Alike Day. I spent the day with the district Campus Technologists. We broke out for different sessions by different presenters.
We discussed how each campus will be preparing a Campus Technology Plan by May 2010. Instructional Technology provided us with a template and different ideas, suggestions, and recommendations. One recommendation was that it be written by the Campus Technology Learning Cadre. However, on our campus, we are rebuilding our Cadre. We will then meet with our Technology Liaison from the district. Once the plan is complete, it will be posted on our campus website (YISD Technology Plan, 2009).
A job description of a Campus Technologist was presented. Some of the requirements were a surprise to some Campus Technologists. As I had been talking with the district about this, I know a lot of what was included. This was one of the reasons I decided to start working on my Master’s in April 2009.
We did some Promethean training but it was more of a review. However, we do have many new CTs this year. We also did Keynote training. I learned some new things to present to my teachers. One of the best things was creating a “scrolling” banner for a website. I immediately placed one on our campus website so that it would be seen by our teachers. I think if they can see how it looks, it will be received better.
The final session was on internet safety. Our district has implemented Cyber-Safety. The district site links to different activities for different grade levels. We received flyers for students with the information. All students must go through internet safety sessions. Irasema and I will be working with my campus counselors to integrate the internet safety into Counselors’ Guidance Lessons already planned. We need to be able to teach the appropriate and ethical use of technology (Pitler, Hubbell, Kuhn, Malenoski, 2007). A parent session is also being discussed. By implementing all of these components on our campus, we will proactive instead of reactive to safety concerns and the internet (Pitler et al., 2007). We will be able to educate parents, students, and educators about online safety and netiquette (Williamson & Redish, 2009). I think this new CyberSafety program that is coming down from the district level will help everyone in our learning community to be better informed consumers of the internet.
